Teaching Philosophy:


I encourage my students to work hard and be the best musician they can be! 

 

My Toronto Drum Lessons are catered to each students unique interests and goals. The most important thing for me in the grand scheme of things is that the student is enjoying themselves and feeling inspired in each and every lesson. 

 

​First Lesson:

 

  • Meet and greet

  • Lesson on fundamentals, technique and simple beat/fill

  • Short Assessment

  • Discuss short and long term goals

  • Explanation as to how we will reach those goals together 

 

Beginner Drums:

 

  • Beginner drum beats, fills and rudiments

  • Learn how to play along with simple songs

  • Basic technique and reading from drum books

 

Intermediate Drums:

 

  • Intermediate drum beats, fills and some rudiments 

  • Intermediate technique and reading

  • Intermediate songs and etudes

  • Coordination exercises 

  • Snare Drum Etudes

  • Applicable Drum Books

 

Advanced Drums:

 

  • Master various musical styles (jazz, latin, funk, pop, african, punk, drum & bass etc.)

  • All 40 rudiments at fast tempos

  • Ostinatos with feet while playing rudiments ontop 

  • Advanced technique and coordination exercises

  • Advanced songs and play along tracks

  • Odd time signatures

  • Improvisation

  • Transcribing drum solos

  • Published Snare Solos

 

I have had many students come to me to prepare for auditions and entrance exams for high school music programs as well as post secondary music schools (Humber, U of T, York). They have all left feeling well prepared and confident.   

 

Studio:

​

At my studio I have a high end electronic drum kit (Roland TD17 KVXS) and a mini electric kit (Roland SPD30). The studio is also equipped with a speaker for song playback, practice pads, sticks, lots of fun and educational books and more.

​

In studio lessons (Lessons usually paid in monthly blocks):

​

  • 45 minutes

  • 60 minutes  < Recommended

  • 90 minutes

​

Rates typically range from $80-$120 per lesson depending on lesson duration and type of lesson package purchased.

Toronto Drum Lessons - Toronto Drum Teacher 

 

Josh is an award winning drummer and drum teacher based in downtown Toronto with a bachelor degree in music from Humber College and 20 years of teaching experience. Josh has toured the world with jazz ensembles, award winning pop artists, rock bands, played on cruise ships and played in pit bands for musicals.  Josh has a strong passion for teaching drum lessons and passing on his knowledge to others. In May of 2008 he was part of the “Jazz in the Schools” program that performed two clinics and music lessons per day at schools across Toronto and helped educate children on the history of Jazz. Josh teaches private drum & percussion lessons to students of all ages and abilities in his downtown Toronto studio as well as online.
